Estimated ranges are great and everything but we need to see what's repeatable in real world conditions. In the winter months range can drop by as much as 40%, which is why we are seeing such a big focus on reducing charge times. With how people typically drive their Porsche we can also assume that a heavy foot is going to bring down these figures by a decent margin.
Porsche Taycan Range... just how far?
It might be the only area where it doesn't live up to Tesla, yes, I'm talking about that all-important statistic: range.
The Porsche Taycan range isn't known for sure yet, but Porsche has been up-front about the number and they've been clever with their narrative.
With less than a year away from deliveries and a production debut later this year, Porsche is saying the Taycan will get 310 miles (500 kilometers) of range when fully charged. To put that into perspective, driving from LA to Las Vegas is 270 miles.
That sounds decent, but remember, the Tesla Model S can go from 315-330 miles on the P100 model.
What makes the Taycan unique is that Porsche is using a smaller and lighter battery pack than Tesla... allegedly, on purpose. This will help with weight (the enemy of performance) and Porsche says that the overall range isn't really important because you'll be able to recharge the battery pack so fast it won't even matter. How fast? Well, according to recent reports, using a fast-charger (that's far more powerful than Tesla's) the Taycan will be able to get a 248 mile charge in just 15 minutes. That's not as quick as a stop at the pump, but it's getting really close!
The big mystery is if that 310 mile range will be for the 600-hp Turbo model or on the base Taycan or Taycan 4S versions. We're betting it's for the Turbo model. And what else we don't yet know is how far the range will be for the Taycan and Taycan 4S.
Looking at what Tesla offers, and assuming it will be close, range for those two should be around 250 to 270 miles.
As for Taycan pricing, it'll reportedly start at around $90,000 and get close to six-figures for a 4S, while the Taycan Turbo will cost close to $130,000 if not a bit over.
As for charging infrastructure, there's a lot of worry that Porsche won't have a proper charging network like Tesla has with its superchargers. If that is a concern of yours, you can stop worrying. Porsche has committed to a nationwide charging network with special corridors in densely populated areas with a total of 5,000 chargers online by the summer of 2019. Car and Driver is predicting that the Taycan's range will be closer to 200 miles than 300 miles.If that's the case that's pretty disappointing.
