Porsche Patents Seats for Self-Driving Cars

It looks like Porsche is getting closer to self-driving cars, filing a pair of patents to unique new seats designed for autonomous vehicles.

The patents were filed in Germany in April 2018 but cross-filed with the World Intellectual Property Organization which published them today.

The illustrations show the seat reclining, with the steering wheel and pedals moving out of the way for autonomous mode.

interesting .. just per those sketches.. i can see myself napping in that position
I think that's important to point out.
A lot of Tesla fanbois on Twitter are harping on this because Porsche doesn't have a self driving system yet.
The reality is, Tesla doesn't either. It's only partially self-driving. Drivers still need to be in control of the car.
This system HAS to be fully self driving because the driver just can't drive the car in that position.

I can see myself falling asleep too...but then freaking out when I wake up because I'm driving down the road. ?

Well I can buy a Model 3 with full self driving package tomorrow with the promise it will be “feature complete” in 2020. What is Porsche’s roadmap to full self driving?

Strange that you’ve never owned a Tesla but seem to have detailed knowledge. I’m on my 2nd model S and yes it can keep you in the lane (even change lanes, sort of) and monitor speed. It’s quite useful in slow moving traffic but not much better than adaptive cruise. It certainly isn’t autonomous. My Taycan arrives in April.

lets just put it this way .. no Lidar = no full self driving.

Just because they haven't declared a roadmap, doesn't mean they don't have one. It's a more conservative way of doing business for sure.
This is compared to Tesla where Elon promises something and then, maybe, delivers on it 18 months late.

Interesting that you changed the topic. The current version of enhanced autopilot is far more advanced than adaptive cruise. It will be interesting to see if your car gets delivered on time. Beautiful car btw, full credit where due.
Tesla fan boys seem to forget that Porsche is part of VW Group which is one of the largest in the industry. Unlike Tesla, just about all the money and resources an automaker can have is well within their reach.

Can't wait to see how Porsche deliveries on autonomous tech. They never let me down on any new product.
