New to Porsche, and considering a CPO 2021 Taycan Turbo (EDIT: bought)

1710 Views 36 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  FlyDriveBike
EDIT 3: I got the car! I am still learning the systems, and I plan to do a full manual read-through in the coming week. The acceleration on this thing is just BRUTAL. Forget the pure insanity of launch control - I can knock heads back just by punching it from 25 miles per hour. FREAKING CRAZY. Also, the instant I got it out this morning, 4 neighbors and their kids came over to check it out. I stopped at the local Indian grocery store and he came out and brought his kids out to see since they were playing in the store. It's definitely an attention-getter, perhaps more than I had anticipated.

EDIT 2: Now I'm conflicted... I have found the "perfect" CPO car, but am just scared about reliability if it was my only car (given that my wife has a car, but has to drive for work also). Am I just overthinking it, or are these too unreliable even with all of the updates? Is there anything I should look for in the service history?

EDIT: Question removed. After seeing the sheer number of issues posted here and on TaycanForum as well, I have decided that it's not worth the risk of dealing with all of the numerous potential issues that seem to pop up regularly on this car.

I appreciate the feedback, and will consider the vehicle in a future model year, but I'll probably be looking to other non-Volkswagen Group brands at this point.

Not ever having to go to a gas station is AWESOME!!! And the Taycan Turbo does zero to 60 faster than Porsche’s claimed 3 seconds flat. The acceleration is insane and you can make yourself sick if you hammer the accelerator. What kind of vehicle will you be coming out of Mr. Slappy_G?
I'm coming out of an Audi S6. That was a larger car than I am used to, since I used to prefer smaller sport sedans/coupes. The S6 was great as a highway cruiser that also has more get-up-and-go than most normal cars (0-60 was rated around 4.6-4.7 as a reference). As it is, this car makes my wife uncomfortable in a full launch, so I am looking forward to REALLY making her angry with this one... :) I fully expect the kids to be sitting in the back screaming for more.

Knowing how practical I normally am with spending, my son still thinks I am screwing with him, and in his words "there's no way you're irresponsible enough to buy a Porsche, Dad." LOL!

As far as serving as a Highway cruiser, I think you’ll find the Taycan is superior to the S6 in every way with the exception of having significantly less range than the ICE S6. In particular the air suspension is absolutely the best I’ve ever had (and I’ve had 4 other luxury vehicles with air suspensions) and the comfort of the ride it provides when set in Normal Driving mode is simply amazing. Combined with the lack of engine/exhaust noise, the highway driving experience is amazing.

I also think the front seats are very, very comfortable so you may very well not miss the massage function of the S6.

Best of all, when you switch to Sport or Sport+ Driving Mode, the Taycan undergoes a complete change of identity - - it becomes a stealthy quiet, 4 door, 4 seat 911 Turbo with all the agility, handling and performance you’d expect from a high end Porsche.

One final thing - - I bet your kids will get a kick out of the Electronic Sport Sound (if you turn it on for them) which makes the Taycan sound like you are at the controls of the Statship Enterprise as you are engaging the Warp drive 😊

This is a 2021 Turbo sedan model. Dealer claims it is fully up to date, but it is a few hours away, so I am trying to read up on what the current PCM version is so I can check when I arrive.

It'll be a bit weird to give up 4 options from my current non-Porsche that this original buyer did not opt for: no massage seats (heresy in a Porsche, I know, but I do long drives), no heads-up display (this one hurts), no puddle lamps (amazing that this is not free on a 160K+ car), and no infrared night vision. I really enjoyed having the night vision on my current car when navigating residential streets or driving near parks with deer. That said, getting 250 HP more power and not paying for gas is a welcome trade.
I agree that the Infrared night vision is a phenomenal safety feature. I won’t get another car without it!

“ As it is, this car makes my wife uncomfortable in a full launch, so I am looking forward to REALLY making her angry with this one... :)”. To reiterate what Slappy_G said about acceleration- I asked my girlfriend if she wanted to see what launch control would do, and she said yes. So I told her to keep her head facing forward, hold on to the handgrips, put the back of her head against the headrest. Ok. Take a deep breath. Ready? (LAUNCH). Girlfriend, mad: “ DON’T EVER F&@ING DO THAT TO ME AGAIN!!!”

I just got the car yesterday and piled the kids in the back and the wife up front. Got onto a highway on-ramp at 10:30PM with no one behind me, so I did my first ever launch. Warned them to keep the heads back. My kids were blown away and requested we do this once a day from now on. 😛 My wife, however, said that while she thought the acceleration was insane, her stomach tightened up and she came dangerously close to yakking all over my new interior. So, no more launches with my wife.

I was blown away by the speed, but I was not able to fully enjoy it as I was also preoccupied with not wrecking the car due to losing control. Now that I've done it once and know what to expect, I fully expect that the next one(s) will be even more fun.

I’m glad your use of this forum eventually led to your acquisition of a Taycan Turbo. I wish you many years and many miles of truly enjoyable driving.

An interesting reply from a forum member who has posted a grand total of 33 highly negative comments about the Taycan.

I question whether wingswmm even owns a Tesla Model S Plaid.

All I will say is the mindset and desires of Tesla buyers are very different than those of Taycan buyers.

Before I purchased my Taycan Turbo I tried really, really hard (due to its much lower price) to like the Tesla Model S. After multiple test drives I simply couldn’t talk myself into buying a Tesla. I spent a lot more money to purchase my Taycan Turbo and I could not be happier.

Now that he’s driven his Taycan Turbo “aggressively” I’m fairly certain that Mr. Slappy_G cares not at all that a Tesla Model S Plaid is a tiny bit faster than his amazingly powerful, superior handling, incredibly comfortable and visually stunning Taycan Turbo.

I'll chime in here to say that I have some experience with Tesla (though not the S Plaid). Given their horribly inconsistent manufacturing, their lack of support for Android Auto, their bad handling (coming from performance sport sedans), and their awful interior design and materials, I can safely say that Tesla was not even close to consideration for me. Further, as much as some of the Taycan service issues scared me initially, I have seen far more scary stuff regarding Tesla's service. The fact that everything has to be handled from within the app and via emails does NOT give me a good feeling. This service issue is also why my wife pulled her Rivian reservation a year ago. As much as we hate dealers and their antics, they are preferable to some of these experiences.

I have no qualms with others driving them, but I'm getting a little tired of people thinking a fast 0-60 launch is all that matters.

That said, the 2.8-ish second 0-60 in my Taycan Turbo is CRAZY fast, and more than enough to freak people the hell out, including me. 😛 I'm sure the 2.3 seconds (the ACTUAL 0-60) of the S Plaid would be even more crazy, but I like a nice quality interior and the other things I mentioned above way more. Also, though I'm not sure I want the attention, this car gets major attention everywhere I go. The day I got it, every neighbor within 5 houses was in my driveway drooling, and when I drove to work, half of my team was in the parking lot trying to lick my car.

Doing a Launch once a day is a worthy goal! What a feeling. On top of that the entire package just works in typical Porsche fashion.

Agree - pick any 50 car attributes, and the Taycan will win 49.5 of them. I’ll give this guy a win on the first launch…but let’s do 5 in a row and see who wins more. Back to back launches. Or 10. Taycan can do it all day long, RIGHT NOW. Tesla needs to prep the battery, get into “cheetah stance”, and I’m already a mile down the road.

Yes - it is well known that we need to require any drag races against Tesla S Plaids be like the World Series - - first EV to win 4 (back to back) races wins!

😊

As far as the 50 attributes goes, I think the Model S actually can win 2 of the 50 - - 1. Rear seat legroom (although I think the actual seating position and thigh support of the Taycan is more comfortable for people less than 6 feet tall) and 2.Total number and reliability of DC fast charging stations (although the Taycan can accept a DC fast charge at a significantly faster rate).

All of the other 48 attributes go in favor of the Taycan. Come to think of it, I think the Taycan wins 98 out of 100 attributes.

I just had a guy I know ask me why I would spend over 120K on a car when I could just get a Model 3 for half that. I just had to shake my head and say, "ah, who knows?" Sometimes, discretion is the better part of valor. 😎

That is absolutely hilarious!

As I said earlier in this thread, the desires and mindset of Tesla buyers are very different from those of Taycan buyers. The guy who said that to you probably was serious OR he is suffering from something I observe many Tesla buyers are currently experiencing.

I think many Tesla buyers are feeling insecure about their purchase. 3 or 4 years ago just about any Tesla buyer could feel confident that what they bought was clearly “the best.” Now that there are lots of EV’s to choose from a variety of car manufacturers, Tesla owners are seeing alternative EV’s that they don’t have and many of those alternatives are QUALITATIVELY much better than their Tesla.

So to make themselves feel better about their Tesla purchase they articulate quantitative reasons why their Tesla is better (lower price, longer range, largest network of fast charging stations, etc.).

My son bought a Hyundai IONIQ5 and it is (qualitatively) a waaaay better EV than either the Tesla Model 3 or Model Y and is in the same price range as those 2 Tesla models.

So if you are every confronted with that same “but a Model 3 is half the price” question, perhaps your answer should be “If I wanted to pay less I’d still want to get the best EV my money could buy so I’d buy a Hyundai IONIC5 or a Kia EV6!”

😊

Fair point. Taycan definitely could use more rear seat room, and I question why Porsche would make a 4 or 5 seater without a little more room. My 2015 Panamera is (I think) a couple inches longer, and has several inches more rear legroom. It also has more storage under the rear hatch. It ALSO has a twin turbo V-8 taking up all the space under the hood…so I just don’t understand why they couldn’t have at least matched the Panamera legroom.

On the other hand, I will never ride in the back seat of my Taycan, and overall there is more upside to the Taycan CT Turbo over the Panamera Turbo…I just have to field the occasional complaint about rear seat room.
