Just got a 21 Taycan Turbo - my first Porsche and my first EV

Hey guys - with the help of a number of you answering my panicked questions, I pulled the trigger on my new Taycan Turbo. First, the requisite picture:

Car Wheel Land vehicle Vehicle Tire

Background
  • I have owned several sport sedans before. I hate SUVs and crossovers, and like wagons, but those are rare around the US...
  • I have never owned a Porsche and this is my first EV. I have no 240V setup in my garage yet, but that should be solved within the next 2 weeks.
  • This was purchased used and I will be selling my other car and using this as my daily driver year-round. I have zero desire to treat this as a garage queen - it will be driven.
  • I am in the Cleveland, Ohio area which means cold winters will absolutely be a thing. I will definitely be doing at least 1 if not 2 underbody car washes a week to keep any salt and gunk off the car as much as possible. There is a nice 100% touchless car wash near me, which is good.
Initial Impressions - Positives
  • The Gentian Blue metallic color is gorgeous. Literally nothing bad to say about it.
  • HOLY F BALLS, it's fast. I know electric cars pull hard, but DAMN. DAAAMN.
  • Shockingly, the ride is smoother in Normal than my Audi with 20" wheels even though this has the 21" Mission-E wheels.
  • This thing gets attention EVERYWHERE. More so than I expected, and possibly more than I want. I love showing off as much as the next guy, but going from a nondescript silver Audi to this has been rather eye-opening. The first day I got it home, every neighbor within several houses was in my driveway, and most brought their kids to check it out. At work, we had to take a 15 minute break since everyone HAD to see the car. I thought a darker color would be more stealthy, but clearly not.
  • I am enjoying InnoDrive quite a bit with a couple of exceptions. I did turn off the auto-speed limit function, which helps a lot. I do find that when I am approaching a turn and my signal is on, the car will tend to slow WAY down. More than I would like. Outside of that, I like that it gives me some gas when I go to pass on the highway versus normal adaptive cruise control.
  • Others have said it, but this car coasts like nothing else. Part of that is me being used to ICE engine drag, and part is just how well these motors allow freewheeling. My wife's Audi does not coast NEARLY as well as this car.
  • The passenger display is a complete gimmick, but it looks cool as hell, and lets my kids play DJ when I'm driving.
  • The noise/heat insulating glass definitely keeps the majority of the heat out.
  • The interior quality is nice and I appreciate the layout.
Initial Impressions - Negatives
  • This car came with the full SportDesign package. I like everything except the front design. I prefer the regular bumper with the "tears" at the corners of the headlights. I think the SportDesign front intakes look a bit too "busy" for lack of a better word.
  • Not a fan of the overall lack of buttons, but at least it's not as stupid as Tesla with capacitive steering wheel buttons.
  • The connectivity from the phone app to the car can be a little slow, but it seems to be pretty consistent.
  • The noise/heat insulating glass definitely affects RF signals such as phone and GPS within the car. Everything still works, but signals are noticeably attenuated versus opening the windows. It's also not as quiet as I expected, probably due to the windows being frameless. I would have preferred frames.
  • Charging via 110V AC is a fool's errand. Don't even try, if you're driving more than 10 miles a day. It recharges 1-1.5% per hour.

Looking forward to learning more about the car and EV life as I continue with this car. I have joined PCA at the suggestion of a friend, as well. Keeping an eye open for events.

Congratulations on your first Porsche and your first EV!

IMHO the Gentian Blue Metallic is the best looking color available for the Taycan so it’s no wonder how many people are gawking all over your car.

Regarding the lack of buttons on the dash and center console, I predict you will quickly forget there aren’t physical buttons there since the haptic feedback of the “buttons” is excellent. And that lack of physical buttons is what helps create the futuristic look of the Taycan’s interior.

As far as the Taycan not being as quiet as you expected, that is very surprising to me. I also have the noise insulating glass and my Taycan is amazingly quiet. Do you have the Electric Sport Sound turned off? If the Electronic Sport Sound is off and your Taycan isn't as quiet as you think it should be then maybe it's the 21" wheels or the tires making a lot of road noise??

I have the 20" Turbo Aero Wheels and Continental ProContact tires and they provide a very smooth ride and I don't really hear much tire noise at all.

Anyway, congratulations on pulling the trigger on becoming a Porsche owner and an EV owner. Enjoy!

Thanks! My problem with the touchscreen buttons is that they still require looking down. With real buttons, you can feel for them and get used to them by muscle memory. Not the end of the world, but it's definitely more distracting having to glance down.

The 21" wheels may be to blame for noise. I am perhaps spoiled from my prior Audi as it had the dual pane glass and did have proper window frames, which also helped. This car is certainly not noisier, per se, but I expected it to be quieter given the lack of engine and better aerodynamics. Admittedly, it's still quieter than the majority of cars.
